Marken, fishing village in The Netherlands

About 25 kms away from the hussle and bussle of Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands, lies the fishing village of Marken. Lighthouse The White Horse already points sailors on the IJssel Lake the way home since 1700. Once an island in the Zuider Sea, Marken is now attached to the mainland by a dyke. In wintertime the village attracts many spectators, when big chunks of ice from the frozen lake pile up on the dyke. Marken is a picturesque little place with green painted wooden houses and warves on stilts.
