Mary Munnik is a freelance photographer from The Netherlands specialized in documentary photography, travelling, scenery and people.
She likes to get close her subject. Spending a considerable amount of time with the indiginous people in the rainforest of Sarawak did just that. By getting involved in their lives she managed to capture
intimate and unique moments. Mary has done photo exhibitions on Japan and a number of publications in magazines and newspapers on the headhunters of Borneo. She works for international magazines, to which
she contributes both pictures and articles.
Major photo exhibitions:
March 2004 until January 2005 Museum Nusantara, Delft, The Netherlands: Bestemming Borneo.
April until October 2005 Museum der Weltkulturen, Frankfurt, Germany:Impression Borneo.
Mary has lived in Japan and Malaysia, and travelled extensively, always looking for yet unspoilt and authentic destinations. She writes in English as well as in
Dutch and speaks five languages, including Japanese. In order to communicate with the people of Borneo she learned Malay and one of the tribal languages. At the present her sense of adventure brought her to
live in Kabul, Afghanistan for a year.
After graduating with a Masters degree in Industrial Design Engineering from a reknowned university in The Netherlands, she has an international career in business.

"This old lady with stretched earlobes and tattooed arms, distinguished features of her tribe, clearly enjoyed being photographed. Her face cracked open in the most beautiful smile."

The Rainforest, Mulu National Park, Malaysia © Mary Munnik 2000
"This picture gives an atmospheric impression of what the rainforest is like: the ray of sunshine, the spray of water, the darkness. In most of my pictures you will find people to give an idea about dimensions and make a picture more lively."

Kicking their heels, Tokyo, Japan © Mary Munnik 1999.
"Japanese teenagers dressed up in a 'kimono with a twist'. While the girl on the left looks almost western, her friend has a distinct oriental expression on her face."
